On Tuesday, some of the new music I’ve been teasing came out!

Admittedly, when Emile reached out to me a few years ago to be a part of his residency at Zebulon here in LA, I wasn’t too familiar with his work as a songwriter. I was a little bit familiar with his composing work, mostly the score from Kajillionaire, and my dear friend Angel Olsen recorded a song with him for it.

On sort of a blind date, I showed up at his house and we sat in his modest studio. I’m always impressed by people with minimal gear in their studios, who can clearly make lots of music with very little tools at hand. There was this familiarity about him, full of energy and clearly a livewire of inspiration. As we started getting to know each other, he told me that we met once, a long long time ago in 2014, in a coffee shop that no longer exists in Greenpoint. I suddenly remembered that day in a flash, sitting down and paying what seemed like too much even back then for a coffee. It was the day that I had essentially “auditioned” to be in Kevin Morby’s band, and he officially asked me to join him on the road. At this point in my life I was still living in Upstate New York, my home, and had only ever been on a few crusty regional DIY tours that were never more than 3 or 4 shows long. I was young, incredibly green, and riding high on the new path in front of me. I had clearly been so excited and needed to tell anyone who would listen, and that happened to be the barista at the overpriced coffee shop, Emile. He was at his own crossroads at the time, a musician in NYC in his band (The Dig) trying to catch his magic and also starting to compose more seriously for film. I remember him, vaguely. I remember talking to a pretty guy behind the counter about his band. He told me he remembers Dirty Projectors playing and bonding over both liking the record. He remembers it because he was back then, like me, just wanting music to be where all the time goes

I was floored that he was able to place this memory in time, and felt somehow more at ease knowing that our paths had crossed in this formative moment. Since then, we’ve become close friends and collaborators. In addition to playing on two of his records and a few of his scores, he arranged my song More Than Love for a 32 person choir, which was a big honor to perform with. We did it again at his beloved Holiday show. (Also joined by Dave Longstreth, speaking of Dirty Projectors!)

We’re going to play the songs we wrote, but a few from each of our catalogs in a couple weeks! Tickets still available. We’ll have the full band- Dougie Stu, Sam KS, me, and Emile.

You may have gathered that I’ve been spending a lot more time in studio with other people’s music the over the past few years-something I deeply love. I’m doing this more and more, and I have a playlist that is updated every time a release comes out that I’ve played on or contributed to in some way. It’s on Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube.
